FAIRHOPE, AL — Fairhope declared 82 degrees official Christmas sweater weather Wednesday, clearing residents to begin wearing heavy knitwear despite conditions feeling closer to 88.
The fictional seasonal declaration took effect at noon, when the calendar showed November and the atmosphere continued operating under a summer franchise agreement.
“Sweater weather is no longer a temperature,” said imaginary holiday readiness director Holly DeGrease. “It is a personal commitment made near reliable air conditioning.”
Residents may now wear cable-knit reindeer, decorative snowflakes and any garment containing bells, provided they sign a seasonal heat waiver.
Layer symbolically
Public-health guidance recommends that sweaters be worn for no more than eleven consecutive minutes outdoors.
Participants should remain within six feet of a boutique entrance, identify the nearest cold-air vent and appoint one friend as a cardigan-removal partner.
Early signs of seasonal overheating include flushed cheeks, aggressive talk about cold fronts and insisting the sweater “really breathes.”
“The important thing is to layer symbolically,” DeGrease said. “A scarf communicates December without placing the entire torso at risk.”
The city has established cooling stations inside stores already playing Christmas music. Each station offers iced cocoa, peppermint electrolyte tablets and a private area where residents can remove festive wool without being seen by the family photographer.
Photos before perspiration
Local families began scheduling holiday portraits during a narrow period between sunrise and visible perspiration.
Fictional resident Claire Tartan dressed her family in matching sweaters at 7:15 a.m. By 7:22, two children had defected to short sleeves and her husband was standing directly beneath an air return.
“The photograph looks wintry,” Tartan said. “You cannot tell that everyone had been lightly misted with sports drink.”
Professional photographers recommend completing all seated poses first, before knitwear becomes structurally attached to the subjects.
Artificial snow may be used, but only if it is cool to the touch and does not dissolve into landscaping runoff.
Cooler weather eventually possible
Forecasters expect temperatures to moderate later in the week, potentially allowing residents to wear sweaters for their original purpose.
Until then, officials emphasized that participation is voluntary except for anyone appearing in a Christmas card, retail promotion or grandparent-organized group photograph.
At press time, one man had completed an entire walk downtown in a quarter-zip sweater and described himself as “perfectly comfortable.”
Witnesses said he delivered the statement from inside a walk-in beverage cooler.
The declaration remains in effect until temperatures fall below 70 or Fairhope decides it is time for spring merchandise, whichever occurs first.
