FAIRHOPE, AL — A seemingly innocent request for a paint color has exposed what may be Fairhope’s longest-running secret: a custom shade known only as “Fairhope White.”

The discovery immediately raised three questions. Who created Fairhope White? Who possesses the formula? And who decides whether a customer is Fairhope enough to buy it?

According to sources familiar with our imagination, applicants must submit two elevation drawings, photographs of neighboring houses, proof that no vinyl windows are contemplated and a notarized statement confirming they have complained about traffic at least twice during the previous calendar year.

“It’s basically white. But once you call it Fairhope White, the price goes up 40 percent and somebody has to approve it.”

Color specialists describe the shade as falling somewhere between Historic Preservation Ivory and Planning Commission Eggshell. Under direct sunlight it reads as white. In shade it reads as a slightly different white. At a public hearing it reads as continued until next month.

A formula protected by tradition

Rumors of the paint have circulated for years. Some residents believe every historic home receives a small emergency can when the property changes hands. Others insist the formula is stored beneath the Fairhope Museum beside original Colony documents and the architectural plans for every addition somebody was not allowed to build.

A competing theory holds that there is no single formula. The color simply changes according to the age of the house, the width of the porch and whether the applicant says “downtown” or “in town.”

Provisional purchase requirements

  • One current utility bill and two generations of local references
  • A paint chip no larger than the maximum allowable accessory structure
  • Written assurance that the shutters will remain decorative
  • Final color review at 10 a.m., noon and golden hour

Officials have not commented on the existence of Fairhope White, mostly because we have not asked them.

The resident who started the inquiry is reportedly considering a commercially available off-white while the application is reviewed. Neighbors have already appealed.

Full investigation warranted.
